Scottish physician Arthur Mitchell (1826-1909) was appointed Deputy Commissioner of Lunacy with the newly established General Board of Lunacy for Scotland in 1857. His appointment coincided with a report produced by the Scottish Royal Lunacy Commission that prompted a greater understanding and care of the insane. This book is a special study of individuals in private care, not housed in asylums, thus making the author a pioneer in the field of community care. The author has dedicated his book to his superior, Dr. William A. F. Browne (1805-1885), Commissioner of Lunacy.
