César-Pierre Richelet was a 17th-century French grammarian and lexicographer who edited this first methodically-organized dictionary of the French language. Richelet rejected dialectic, archaic and trivial words and only included words in general use at the time, supported by literary quotations. The first edition appeared in 1680 and was ordered to be burned but was rescued by Richelet and reissued in 1681. Many later editions, including this one by Pierre Aubert in 1728, appeared after Richelet's death. An abridged version of 1759 was more popular than the original but various editions continued right into the early 19th century.
