James Talboys Wheeler (1824-1897) attempted an unsuccessful career as a publisher and bookseller before venturing into authorship of student handbooks. He is better known for his career in India where he was appointed professor of "moral and mental philosophy" at Madras College. He went on to become a bureaucrat and historian.
