Front hinge cracking towards head. Armorial bookplate for Beilby Thompson of Escrick (prominent Yorkshire family - house now a school). Some dampness stains at top of most pages. Moderate foxing. Small worm marks edges of last few pages. Ink inscription last page of preface. French Catholic theologian, poet, and writer Francois Fenelon (1651-1715) was appointed tutor to the young Duke of Burgundy for whom he wrote Telemaque (1699), his most famous work. Here he attempts to prove the existence of God through discussions about the universe, Earth, plants, animals, and humans.
