Gabriel Daniel was a French Jesuit historian best known for his French history which appeared in 1713. Here he writes a reply to "Provincial Letters", a series of 18 letters written by French philosopher and theologian Blaise Pascal under the pseudonym Louis de Montalte. The men were on opposite sides of the Formulary Controversy which pitted the Jansenists against the Jesuits in 17th century France.
