This business originated on Kingston's waterfront in 1848 as the Ontario Foundry. By 1900, it was one of Kingston's largest employers. It went through several bankruptcies and reorganizations and carried various names before becoming the Canadian Locomotive Company, Limited in 1911. The CLC was a major contributor to the CNR and its predecessors. The company's name changed to Fairbanks Morse (Canada) Ltd. in 1965. It then amalgamated with Crucible Steel of Canada Ltd. into Colt Industries (Canada) Ltd. and was acquired by Colt Industries, Inc. in 1970.
