    419 p. Two colour and 196 b&w illustrations. Blue cloth hardcover with gold lettering. Scratched front cover and bumped corners. An occasional spot inside. John Ward Stimson, artist, author and lecturer, was born in Paterson, NJ in 1850 and graduated from Yale and the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris. He became lecturer and teacher of Art at Princeton University, was for four years director of the Art Schools of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, founded the Artist-Artisan Institute of New York in 1888, became director of the Art and Science Institution of Trenton, NJ, and wrote numerous books and articles. By 1916 he had retired to southern California and died there in 1930.
