The author was a Jesuit father and was responding to Fontenelle's assertion that pagan oracles were the work of idolatrous priests, only stopped under the first Christian emperors. Baltus contends that the oracles were the work of a demon and were silenced by the arrival of Jesus Christ. Fontenelle did not reply to this volume, but Leclerc made a spirited critique to which Balthus responded in this second volume. French text.
