Françoise Bertaut de Motteville (c. 1621 - 1689) was part of the household of Anne of Austria (1601-1666), consort of King Louis XIII of France and mother of Louis XIV. Mme. de Motteville's chief work is these "Memoires" which give a faithful picture of the life of the French court in the 17th century. Index at rear of vol. 5.

    5 vols.: 555; 570; 588; 558; 506 p. 17 cm. Title page vignettes. Full leather with gilt impressing on spines, red and black spine labels. Black and red title pages. Hinges cracking. Rear hinge of vol. 1 very loose. Most spine ends a bit chipped and most corners bumped. Bookplate of former owner "Lady Evelyn" and some label residue on front pastedowns. Vol. 2 has one missing front endpaper, stains on pages 538, 543-544 and surrounding pages. Vol. 3 has small worm hole on inside of front board, chip from 465. Vol. 4 has small dark stain on p. 59.
