Robert Cary was a courtier of Queen Elizabeth I who was also a successful Warden of the Borders region between England and Scotland. Written in 1625, Cary's memoirs provide a first-hand account of life in a violent and troubled time. Upon the death of Queen Elizabeth, it was Cary who rode to Edinburgh to inform King James that he had ascended the throne.
