Actually written in English by John Shebbeare (1709-1788), a British Tory political satirist, although he pretends to be the "translator" of this work by the fictional Angeloni. The "Letters" are a political satire, an attack on the Duke of Newcastle, and modeled on Bolingbroke's writings against Robert Walpole. It was this book that allowed Boswell to profess that Shebbeare deserved respect in London's literary circles after he was imprisoned for his political writings.
