Thomas Chatterton, creator of pseudo-medieval poetry, used "Thomas Rowley" as his pseudonym. Editor Thomas Tyrwhitt, a Chaucerian scholar, seems to have at first believed the poems to be genuine medieval works but eventually realized they were Chatterton's. Controversy raged over the age and authorship of these poems for years after the poet's death by suicide.
