Proceedings of a Symposium on Large-Scale Digital Calculating Machinery. Jointly Sponsored by The Navy Department Bureau of Ordnance and Harvard University at The Computation Laboratory 7-10 January 1947
The proceedings of the first large-scale computer conference. Held in 1947, the conference was held at the time of the official opening of Harvard's new Computation Laboratory. The symposium, attended by over 300 people, provided one of the first forums for discussion of design, construction, operation and application of computers. It was also the first of two such conferences organized by Howard Aiken, head of the laboratory. The main focus was on technological approaches to machine computation. Also at this meeting, Samuel H. Caldwell proposed the formation of an organization for researchers engaged in the new field of electronic computing, the Association for Computing Machinery.
