La Perouse sailed from France in 1785 with two ships for the western coast of America, which he explored from Alaska to Monterey in 1786. This account, with ships' records etc., he sent to France from Botany Bay in January 1788 after which he vanished with both ships. A search expedition dispatched by the French government, 1791-94, failed to solve the mystery of his disappearance. This account, with the plates and charts, includes detailed observations on the nature and natives of the Pacific coast of Canada.
