Antonio Gil was a well-known Guayaquileño who arrived in Galapagos and colonized southern Isabela in 1893. Washington Henry Ochsner (b. July 4, 1879 in Prairie du Sac, Sauk Co., Wisconsin) was a geologist and conchologist. In 1905-06, during an 18-month expedition undertaken by the California Academy of Sciences to the Galapagos Islands, he was in charge of geology, paleontology, and conchology. He discovered fossils on Isabela (Albemarle), Santa Cruz (Indefatigable) and Baltra (South Seymour) islands. His extensive field notes are housed with his archives at the California Academy of Sciences in San Fancisco. After this expedition he acted as a consulting geology and also published scientific papers. Ochsner returned to the Galapagos in 1916. This collection appears to have been compiled by W.B. Sayers, assistant manager of the Hotaling Estate Company in the Merchants Exchange Building, San Francisco, in cooperation primarily with Ochsner.
