JACKSON, A. Y.
Frederick Banting, discoverer of insulin, found an escape from medical research in painting, and improved as an artist under the tutelage of famed Group of Seven founder A.Y. Jackson. Banting and Jackson would often go on sketching expeditions together, forming a lasting friendship. Over many years the two painted together in Georgian Bay, Quebec and the Arctic. Jackson remarked that Banting was a good companion, ready to go anywhere, patient, persistent and energetic. Had Banting survived World War II, he surely would have returned to sketching. Jackson remarked that one of the last things Banting said to him was: Wont it be great when the war is over to get back to the country and paint again! Memoir by Frederick W. W. Hipwell.
