Gustavus William Wicksteed's long life from 1799 to 1898 was spent filling various legal positions: assistant law clerk to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada in 1828; in 1838 law clerk to the Special Council of the Province; law clerk of the Legislative Assembly of the United Provinces in 1841; law clerk to the Canadian House of Commons in 1867. He published several indexes to the statues of Canada as well as this more interesting book of poetry or "waifs." Don't miss "Phrenology," pp. 33-34, in which the poet describes the characteristics of England (Johnny Bull), Scotland (Sandy), and Paddy (Ireland).
