The first "Spadina" house was built in 1818 by Dr. William Warren Baldwin. He named his 200-acre estate "Spadina," which derived from an Ojibwe word. Baldwin himself designed a two-storey wood-frame house that burned down in 1835. A smaller house was built later. Eventually this property was sold to the Austin family who built the house known as the Spadina Museum today. William a medical doctor, businessman, lawyer, judge, architect and reform politician. He and his better-known son, Robert, introduced the concept of "responsible government" to the colony.
