Hoffman (1635-1706) was a theologian and historian in addition to his work as a lexicographer. He held a professorship in Greek at the University of Basel. This is the two-volume first edition of his lexicon, one of the last written in Latin, later expanded into a 4 vol. set. The most important work of a 17th century Swiss scholar of importance to the history of European philology.
