Cesar-Pierre Richelet (1626 - 1698) was a French grammarian and lexicographer, the compiler of this first dictionary of the French language. Richelet provided his users with many usage notes on 17th-century French, including information on the situations in which words or meanings are used, the level of usage and the region in which they are typical. He also gives spelling variants and the pronunciation of hard words as well as "dirty" words, provincial words, vocabulary of the common folk, neologisms and archaic words. An enormous commercial success, it had 60 editions between 1680 and 1811.

Vol. 1 has cracking of lower front hinge, corners bumped, much wear and rear board quite scuffed, badly chipped lower spine and some unravelling at spine head. Vol. 2 is also worn. Chipped edge to front board. Spine chipped at head and torn and chipped at tail. Pencil and ink notations on front endpapers and some soiling. Well thumbed. Vol. 1: Lots of thumb marks p. 443. Some dampness stains. Ink mark p. 187. Hole in p. 291. Vol. 2: Some dog-eared corners. Hole in 407. Small chip in 455. Some ragged edges in "Additions" section at rear.
