The poems were written on odd pieces of paper in the trenches to the sound of bullets, between one attack and another; they were mailed to the one woman" over here in America. Capt. Horne is one of the poets who helps us best to understand what the war can do to a man's soul. He was killed in January, 1916, giving up his life to rescue a wounded soldier, lying in front of the trenches."
