Catlin's volumes became a classic description of the natives of North America, based on his careful observations and considerable time spent living with them. First published in 1841 with uncoloured plates, the first edition with coloured plates was 1876. This is therefore the second edition with coloured plates. Although 1841 is on the title page with no other dates printed in the book, the actual date of printing may be ca. 1880s. The 400 coloured plates on the title pages seems to be an advertising stratagem as no copy or edition was issued with this many. Howes C241. Sabin 11537.
