The author, William Douw Lighthall (1857-1954) was a Canadian lawyer, historian, novelist, poet and philosopher. Today he is best remembered for his anthology, Songs of the Great Dominion, which marked the first publication in book form for several poets, including Bliss Carman, Pauline Johnson, and Duncan Campbell Scott. This book tells the tale of Hiawatha, founder of the League of the Five Nations. Plates by Canadian artist John Sloan Gordon (1868-1940), a founding member of the Art Gallery of Hamilton.
