Sara Jeannette Duncan was a well-known journalist when, in 1888, she and fellow journalist Lily Lewis shocked the world. Good heavens! Two young, unmarried women traveling around the world, without a male escort or chaperone! Duncan wrote a series of articles about her unorthodox adventures which became quite popular in the United States and Canada. Soon a British women´s magazine called The Lady´s Pictorial invited Duncan to publish a fictional version in serial form. That text became the basis of this, her first novel. A Social Departure's critical and commercial success made Duncan a best-selling novelist of international stature.
