Jonas Salk, developer of the first effective vaccine to prevent polio, was one of the most famous and revered figures of the twentieth century. Using a title deliberately reminiscent of Darwin's "The Survival of the Fittest," he published this speculative tract that spells out the type of individual best suited to guide humanity into the future. By "wisest," Salk means those who comprehend the evolutionary process and make conscious choices to enhance the quality of our species. To some, this will be common sense. To others, this will suggest a eugenic program in which the "wisest" plan humanity's evolution, alter our DNA, reduce the world's population, and create a scientific elite class to oversee the new order.
