Dr. Francis J. Shepherd (1851-1929) was Emeritus Dean of Medicine at McGill when he died. After graduating from McGill in 1873, he travelled to Vienna where he joined Dr. William Osler who had graduated from McGill a year earlier. Upon his return to Canada in 1875, Dr. Shepherd became a professor of anatomy at McGill, a position he held for more than 30 years. After his death, CMAJ wrote that "McGill students have been everywhere recognized as men 'who knew their anatomy.'" Shepherd also pioneered the teaching of dermatology in Canada and later served as President of the Canadian branch of the British Dermatological Society.
