The best known of these medical men is probably Sir James Young Simpson (1811-1870), Scottish obstetrician. Simpson introduced the use of chloroform as an anaesthetic. Within weeks of his 1847 demonstration of the superiority of chloroform, it had almost universally displaced ether as a general anesthetic.
