Born in Hamilton in 1793, Abraham Culver married Amy Harris and had 11 children. This lot is in the present-day Cobourg area. The 1832 census shows him as owner of this lot, as well as Lot 26, Con. 3 and Lot 19, Con. 6. Sheriff Henry Ruttan, son of a UEL, served in the Northumberland Militia during the War of 1812 and was wounded at Lundy's Lane. In 1827 he was named sheriff for the Newcastle District and continued to serve for many years, even after the district was replaced by the United Counties of Northumberland and Durham in 1849.
