Joseph Williams did not desire for these papers to be published. He sometimes wrote poetry and controversial articles under pseudonyms and kept his personal papers in a shorthand that was illegible to others. Before his death he rewrote his papers so that his family could read them. It was 22 years from his passing before his last surviving daughter allowed the papers into outside hands for publication.
