In 1839 the Church of Scotland undertook an effort to convert Jews in the area around Jerusalem, which was, at that time, part of the Ottoman Empire, though it was functionally ruled from Egypt until the following year. What began as an evangelical effort produced more in the way of a documenting of the Jews in the various places visited along the trip.
