Commissioned by the East India Company, the Royal Naval Ship Nemesis, under command of Captain Hall, was instrumental in the British Navy's success during the First Opium War, 1840-42. The Nemesis was designed to draw only six feet of water, enabling her to sail anywhere a junk might go, and offer close support to landing parties. Excellent map of Hong Kong. Appendix with list of officers on board the "Nemesis" and the 48 ships in the British Squadron that sailed into Chinese waters, as well as the Treaty of Nanking and the Supplementary Treaty. Rear map of Canton River has large tear and stained edge. 8 p. of publisher's ads at rear.
