Anna Maria Falconbridge was the wife of Alexander Falconbridge, who wrote An Account of the Slave Trade on the Coast of Africa, an abolitionist treatise. After his death, his wife published this book, a series of letters. Mrs. Falconbridge professes views contrary to her late husband's. See page 235: "For a length of time I viewed the Slave Trade with abhorence--considering it a blemish on every civilized nation that countenanced or supported it...but I am not ashamed to confess, those sentiments were the effect of ignorance, and the prejudice of opinion, imbibed by associating with a circle of acquaintances, bigoted for the abolition, before I had acquired information enough to form any independent thoughts upon the subject..." Her support of the slave trade stems from the idea that Africans will be better off in the "cherishing hands of Christian masters" (p. 236). Gay, 2848.
