Henry Aaron Stern (1820 - 1885) was a Jewish-born Anglican missionary who preached to Jews in Abyssinia. At first King Tewodros II of Ethiopia welcomed him, but, after various slights by Lord John Russell of the British Foreign Office and others, the king's attitude to the British changed. Stern was summoned to appear before the king in October 1863, after which Stern was beaten and imprisoned along with his assistant and two government representatives. Stern's situation was made more difficult by the fact that the king considered some the material in this book insulting, such as the statement that the king's mother was a kosso vendor. These circumstances led to the 1868 British Expedition to Abyssinia, one of the most expensive rescue missions in history.
