Thomas Phillips Thompson (1843-1933) was one of the leading spokesmen of the Canadian labour and socialist movements for over three decades. At the early age of 21, in 1864, he published "The Future Government of Canada," insisting that the then-emerging Dominion should be a republic rather than a monarchy, as well as denouncing the proposed constitutional legalisation of the French language. He later withdrew from the latter position, but remained a republican all his life.
