Denina (1731-1813) was a writer, scholar and historian whose reputation rests mainly upon this history. In 1804 he went to Paris at the invitation of Napoleon to become his imperial librarian.

    6 vols.: 1: xxii, 459; 2: vii, 448; 3: vii, 476; 4: vii, 432; 5: 426; 6: 428 p. 17 cm. Engraved vignettes on title pages and engraved head and tail pieces. Full leather with raised bands, gold impressing on spines. Most spine ends chipped except for vol. 5 which is only a little torn. Most corners worn. Some cracking of leather at hinges. Gold is wearing off lower spine labels. Vol. 2 has dark marks on front board. Bookplates for Baron Northwick on front pastedowns. Slight foxing and occasional thumbing. Endpapers darkened. Vol. 1 has small worm holes extending through to page 95. Small holes in margin of 219. Chips from 393, 433. Vol. 3 has chip in 369. Vol. 4 has black marks on p. 26, small tear in 27. Vol. 5 has chip from 107, tear in 129, some dog ears from 295 to 324. Vol. 6 chip in 313.
