A keen observer and diligent Biblical scholar, Fisher Howe was well-equipped to write the story of his experiences in the Near East in mid-19th century. The author visits the Acropolis, Tyre, Cana, Jacob's Well, Jericho, the Dead Sea, etc. and describes them all in true Victorian style. Even the animals he encounters are worth mentioning: "for noise and quarrelsomeness, we judge the dogs of Nazareth remain unrivalled" (p. 187).
