Sir James Melville (1535 - 1617), was a Scottish diplomat who was once a page to Mary, Queen of Scots. He carried out a number of diplomatic missions for Henry II of France as well but is perhaps best known as a special emissary to reconcile Queen Elizabeth I to Mary's marriage with Lord Darnley. Melville retired to his estate at Halhill and wrote these memoirs, a valuable authority for the history of the period. They were first published by his grandson, George Scott, in 1683.
