Robert Cary was a courtier of Queen Elizabeth I who was also a successful Warden of the Borders region between England and Scotland. Written in 1625, Cary's memoirs provide a first-hand account of life in a violent and troubled time. Upon the death of Queen Elizabeth, it was Cary who rode to Edinburgh to inform King James that he had ascended the throne.

xxxiv, 236 p. 21 cm. Full leather. Front board is held on by loosening repair paper, rear hinge very loose. Spine ends a little chipped, corners worn. Front pastedown endpaper has ink signature and two owner bookplates. Front free endpaper blind stamped "Cudle Cottage, Much Hadham, Herts." Frontispiece missing. Pages neat and clean.
