Known in German as Franz Pelzel, Frantisek Pelcl (1734-1801) was a Czech writer, historian and scholar. The title of this work can be translated as "Pictures of Bohemian and Moravian Scholars and Artists." Each scholar has an engraved portrait and a short discussion. The last two scholars in volume one - Jonathan Eybeschütz and David Ben Abraham Oppenheimer - are Jewish. Religious reformer Jan Hus appears in volume one, page 61. A woman, Elizabeth Weston, appears in volume three, page 71. Weston, an English woman, married a Prague lawyer and was known for her Latin poetry. German text.

Volume 4's spine has been tape repaired. Endpapers have pencil notations and slight label residue. Most pages darkened and often stained and thumbed. Minor chipping throughout. Each volume stamped on title page. Vol. 1: Ink doodling on page 96. Vol. 2: Large chips from pages 167 and 179. Vol. 3: Tear in top of p. 69 and in portrait opposite page 92. Blue stain on p. 129. Vol. 4: Pages 15 and 175 torn.
