Rene Aubert, Abbe de Vertot (1655-1735) was a French historian who was one of the most prolific 18th-century authors on the subject of revolutions. His histories generally had many French editions before being translated into other languages. This history of the Portuguese Revolution of 1640 was the most popular of his works, having 35 printings in French alone. The book records Portugal's independence resulting from the dissolution of the Iberian Union. An enlarged edition of the author's Histoire de la conjuration de Portugal. Index of names.
