Topics include fruit growing and forestry, insects and insectivorous birds, and bee farming. The most interesting section, however, may be that of grape culture and wine making; this section examines grape growing in Ontario, markets, frosts, insects, planting vines, manure for vines, favourable localities (Niagara, Kent, Essex), wine making, prosperity of the wine trade, comparison with French wines (ours our better, apparently), strength of Canadian wine, adulteration of French wine, Concord grapes, etc. A quote from Mr. Girardot concludes that "I don't think there is any part of France where grapes bear so much or do so well as in Essex" (p. 13). Even includes illustrations of insects injurious to the grape, such as the grape-vine caterpillar, beautiful wood-nymph moth, and little tree crickets.
