Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor

PEAKE, Mervyn

Regular price $400.00 Sale

The darkly humorous first book of British fantasy writer and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968). The story concerns the nautical adventures of the pirate Captain Slaugherboard and his eclectic crew aboard The Black Tiger. At a remote island, they capture a small humanoid, referred to only as the Yellow Creature, with whom Slaughterboard develops a strange infatuation. His crew gradually falls prey to accidents and the book ends with the Captain and the Yellow Creature forsaking piracy for fishing on the island. The book is notable for Peake's poetic style and his fine illustrations of fantastic beasts. The publishing name "Mr. Pye" refers to Peake's 1953 novel by that name.
