His tours throughout the United States and Canada resulted in letters, essays, and periodical articles, assembled into this volume among others. He describes the Mississippi River, St. Louis, Lake Winnipeg, Lake Superior, Sault Saint Marie, Mackinaw, the Catskills, Adirondacs, Lake Champlain, Montreal, Quebec, the Saguenay, "Esquimaux" of Labrador, the Cherokees and their customs, the Bay of Fundy, Miramichi, Gaspé, Florida, Alabama, New Orleans, rattlesnakes, plantation customs, fishing, and Indian legends, plus much more. Correspondence with his friend Washington Irving is reproduced in the Preface.
