This book about England's last great wilderness, as it is often called, is a systematic topographical and historical survey of Dartmoor. Every river "country" has its own map showing courses and names of even the smallest tributary streams. Authentic place names are featured throughout the book, their origin being traced wherever possible. Fascinating photos mark various features, both natural and human. Something of the mystery and atmosphere of this vast moorland are revealed in these pages and the lives of the "moormen" and their families over several centuries are described in detail.
