Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1850-1942), third son of Queen Victoria, was Governor General of Canada from 1911 to 1916. As GG, Connaught was involved in military recruitment and philanthropy during World War I, but privately considered PM Robert Borden a weak wartime leader. Before his departure from Canada in 1916, he laid the cornerstone for the new Parliament buildings after the centre block was destroyed by fire. His daugher, Princess Patricia, was the first honorary colonel-in-chief of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.
