Dobbs and Co. was a firm of embossers, print publishers and ornamental stationers located in London in 19th century. Portraits produced for Court Magazine. These "celebrated persons" are primarily royalty, royal mistresses, and other rulers such as Cromwell. Most portraits are female, perhaps because they were what Dobbs chose to print, or because the collector was herself female. Since all are engraved by Hargrave, it's not surprising everyone looks a little alike. But the costumes are exquisite and will be of use to today's illustrators and costume designers.
