P. Lely; Goldar Sculpt.
Engraved for Harrison's edition of Rapin's History of England. "In the Possession of John Sydenham Esq." at bottom. English physician Thomas Sydenham (1624 – 89) was the author of Observationes Medicae which became a standard textbook of medicine for two centuries. Known as 'The English Hippocrates,' Sydenham's many achievements included the discovery of Sydenham's chorea, also known as St Vitus' Dance. To him is attributed the adage: "A man is as old as his arteries."
