First published in 1847– 48, Memorials of Edinburgh is a renowned historical and topographical study, featuring meticulous engravings based on Wilson’s own drawings. The the work documents Edinburgh's medieval buildings, streets, and closes, many of which were threatened by rapid 19th-century urban redevelopment. The idea was to record Edinburgh's architectural heritage before it was effaced by "progress." Brigadier-General Sir Robert Cranston (1843 - 1923) was a Scottish military officer who served as Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1903 to 1906. Dinsdale T. Young (1861- 1938) was an eminent Methodist preacher.
