Architect Joseph Urban (1872 – 1933) was known for his theatrical design as well as his illustrations for children's books. Here he gives a brief history of theatre itself, followed by a description of six new Art Deco-style theatres he designed: The Ziegfeld Theatre, Paramount Theatre, Metropolitan Opera House, Reinhardt Theatare, Jewish Art Theatre and The Music Centre. Each design complements the location and purpose of the theatre. The plates include exterior views, floor plans, murals, etc. Some of these buildings, such as the Ziegfeld, no longer exist.
