Once serving only the practical purposes of heating and cooking, the fireplace evolved into a work of art. The author traces the fireplace from primitive ancient technology to the magnificent designs of the Elizabethan and Renaissance periods. Plates are taken from some of the great houses of England, including Bolsover Castle, Audley End, and Haddon Hall. Some of them, such as the one in plate LXIV, look a little too fine to be used. And some, such as that in plate XXXVI, are now in museums, as befits great artwork.
